How to build a technology prototype

A prototype is built to answer a question. If it cannot fail a named question, it is a first version wearing a costume.

Prototype · Build · Hardware · Software

How to build a technology prototype: start from the question, not from the architecture. A prototype that could become production without a rewrite was not a prototype. It was a rushed product.

Hardware and software fail differently

Hardware fails in the room: heat, clamp, oil, a cable someone trips on. Software fails in the workflow: nobody logs in, the code list is too long, the report is in the wrong meeting. Prototype in the failure domain you actually fear.

Pretty is a risk

A polished demo gets funded and never questioned. Keep the prototype ugly enough that people still tell you the truth. Then, when the question is answered, build the thing you would be willing to own.

How to tell if this is a real job

“How to build a technology prototype” only matters if someone already does the work and it hurts. Write the job in one line. Write who does it on a Tuesday. Write what they do when the new thing is down. If the answer is “we wait,” you have a toy. If the answer is “we lose a day,” you have a product problem.

Prototype in the open, production on a domain you own

A prototype is a test you can fail. Production is a URL, a login, a bill, and a person who can turn it off. Do not mix them. Do not call a deck a prototype. Do not call a prototype a company.

Weekly increments you can click. Acceptance is a non-engineer completing the job. You own the repo on final payment. SINLE Technologies LLC bills in USD against a written scope.

What we decline

A brochure with a new logo. A chatbot with no job. “The Uber of” a market you do not serve. If the next step is a system a company can run — with a human lock on money and sends — write.

The steps — do these in order

  1. 01

Write the question on the box

“Will they enter a downtime code?” not “build monitoring v1.”

  2. 02

Pick the cheapest medium that can be wrong

Script, cardboard, breadboard, a one-page site.

  3. 03

    Instrument the question

A tally, a clock, a recording. Memory is not instrumentation.

  4. 04

Throw most of it away on purpose

If you cannot throw it away, you already overbuilt.

If the next step is a system you can keep — a prototype in production, a test you can measure, a product with a written scope — write. Nothing is billed before you approve it.
