Types of innovation · Process · Product
Types of innovation are useful when they change what you fund. They are noise when they become a poster. Four labels cover most companies: product, process, business model, and the size of the step (incremental vs radical).
Product
The thing the customer pays for is different: a new part, a new feature, a new machine. Easy to photograph. Easy to overfund relative to the process that actually makes you late.
Process
How you make, inspect, schedule, or support. Invisible in the catalog. Often where small manufacturers and operators get their year back. A fixture that cuts changeover is process innovation. It will not trend. It will show up in hours.
Business model
Who pays, when, and for what. Rent vs own. Project vs retainer. Per part vs per hour. Changing the model without changing the job is a pricing trick. Changing both is rare and worth a written test.
Size of the step
Incremental: same job, better. Radical: the job itself changes or the old way dies. Most companies live on incremental and pretend they are radical in the about page. That is fine if the incremental list is real.
How to tell if this is a real job
“What are the different types of innovation?” only matters if someone already does the work and it hurts. Write the job in one line. Write who does it on a Tuesday. Write what they do when the new thing is down. If the answer is “we wait,” you have a toy. If the answer is “we lose a day,” you have a product problem.
Prototype in the open, production on a domain you own
A prototype is a test you can fail. Production is a URL, a login, a bill, and a person who can turn it off. Do not mix them. Do not call a deck a prototype. Do not call a prototype a company.
Weekly increments you can click. Acceptance is a non-engineer completing the job. You own the repo on final payment. SINLE Technologies LLC bills in USD against a written scope.
What we decline
A brochure with a new logo. A chatbot with no job. “The Uber of” a market you do not serve. If the next step is a system a company can run — with a human lock on money and sends — write.
The steps — do these in order
- 01
Label the last three changes you shipped
Product, process, or how you get paid. If you cannot label them, they were not changes. They were activity.
- 02
Pick one type to run this quarter
A shop that tries all four at once ships none.
If the next step is a system you can keep — a prototype in production, a test you can measure, a product with a written scope — write. Nothing is billed before you approve it.

Incremental
Incremental vs disruptive innovation
Most valuable work is incremental. Disruption is when the old job dies. Do not use the word until a customer actually leaves the old way.
Technological innovation
What is technological innovation?
A working definition: a new or better way to do a job that someone actually uses. Not a patent, not a demo, not a slide.
Invention
Invention vs innovation: what's the difference?
Invention can exist. Innovation is used. Patents, labs, and demos sit on the invention side until a job changes.
