OEE · Small manufacturers · Software · Availability
OEE software for small manufacturers is often a rebadged factory OS: scheduling, maintenance, quality, HR. You wanted three numbers. You got a second ERP.
OEE is availability × performance × quality. If any factor is a guess, the product is a score you cannot defend.
Availability is a clock plus a reason
Planned production time minus unplanned stops. You need run/idle and a short reason list. Without both, OEE is a vibe.
Performance is not “the machine felt slow”
Ideal cycle vs actual. If you do not have an ideal cycle for the part, skip performance or you will invent it. Many shops should run availability and scrap for six months before they touch performance.
Buy a log, not a religion
A small manufacturer should be able to leave with CSV or a database. World-class OEE on a hostage portal is still hostage. If you need the three numbers in the same app as jobs, that is custom software with a named owner — not a 40-module suite.
What a 20-person shop should measure this month
Before you buy another suite for “OEE software for small manufacturers — three numbers, not a suite,” write three numbers on a whiteboard: unplanned stops (hours), changeover (last chip to first good chip), scrap (pcs or $). Two weeks of honest numbers beat a demo.
If you cannot fill the board, the first job is a clock and a reason code — not a dashboard. Software that starts without a clock becomes a nicer argument.
- Unplanned hours by machine, not a plant average.
- One timed changeover per cell, written on the traveler.
- Scrap with a cause in one word: tool, program, stock, inspect, other.
When software is the lever — and when it is not
Software helps when the clock exists, the stop has a name, and a person still decides what ships. It does not help when the real problem is a missing fixture, a tribal setup, or a mill waiting on inspection.
SINLE Technologies LLC will scope a monitor, a report, or a lock on who stops a job. We will not sell you a MES to hide a queue. A Workflow Audit is paid discovery. Nothing is billed before a written scope.
A human lock on the floor
A model can flag a hole, a tool, a late job. A person still decides scrap or ship. Unsupervised scrap-or-ship is how you train a lawsuit. Name who clicks. Name the kill switch. Put both in the statement of work.
The steps — do these in order
- 01
Pick one machine
OEE on the whole plant is a mash. One bottleneck first.
- 02
Define planned time
If breaks and planned maintenance sit in availability, you will fight the metric.
- 03
Quality is scrap plus rework
A part that ran twice is not 100% quality.
- 04
Publish the three numbers weekly
If they only live in a vendor portal, they are not OEE. They are a login.
If the constraint is already named and the next step is software the shop can keep — a monitor, a report, a lock on who stops a job — write. A Workflow Audit is paid discovery, not a free sales call. Nothing is billed before a written scope.

CNC
CNC machine monitoring software: what a small shop should actually collect
Run, idle, alarm, and a reason — not a 40-widget dashboard. How to choose CNC monitoring without buying a factory OS you cannot leave.
Utilization
Machine utilization software: see idle hours before you buy another mill
Utilization is run time over planned time. How to measure it on a small fleet, and why a pretty heatmap is optional.
Downtime
Manufacturing downtime reduction: start with the stop, not the software
How to cut factory downtime when you do not have a six-figure MES: classify stops, time the worst one, and only then decide if software is the lever.
