How to leave Wix for a website you actually own

“Replace Wix with a custom website” currently ranks Shopify, Elementor and Wix’s own help center. They want you in another editor. The client-ready move is simpler: take your words and your domain, put them on a site you can leave with, and point the old URLs at the new ones.

We do this as Origin when the job is a production surface, or as Sovereign if booking, checkout or a portal has to move with you. We do not “convert” a Wix theme. Themes are not portable. Pretending they are is how rebuilds fail.

What you can take

Text. Images you shot or licensed. Emails. A domain if you registered it. Google Business if the name and address match. Analytics if the property is in your account.

What you cannot take

The Wix app zoo, the exact layout, the “ADI” design, most third-party embeds that were only logged into their account. If a vendor says they will clone it pixel-perfect and host it somewhere else, ask who owns the code in writing.

Why people wait too long

The site “works.” DMs still take the booking. The monthly fee feels smaller than a project. Then you need a change Wix will not do, or you want to sell the company and the buyer asks for the repo. That is an expensive week. Leave while the content is still true.

The steps — do these in order

   Export pages, not the theme

   Copy, images you have rights to, blog URLs if anything ranks. The Wix skin does not come with you. That is the point.

2. 02

   List the URLs Google already knows

   We 301 those to the new paths. A pretty new site that 404s your old links is a demotion you paid for.

3. 03

   Move the domain out of the builder login

   The domain should live at the registrar, pointed at hosting you control. If Wix is the registrar, start that transfer first.

4. 04

   Rebuild the job, not the layout

   Hours, offer, booking or contact. Five pages done beats twenty Wix sections copied badly.

5. 05

   Cut over on a day you can watch

   DNS, forms, analytics. Keep Wix up until the new form has received a real enquiry.

6. 06

   Cancel Wix after the new site is boringly fine

   Not the night of launch. A week later, when you have slept.
